I sometimes wonder about Damocles. Did he look up at the sword that hung from a thread above him? Did he stare at the point, along the blade and to the hilt? Or did he stare straight ahead, ignore it, try to pretend that the sword was not there, and that the little beads of sweat trickling down his back were figments of his imagination?
